When Life Throws a Storm Your Way
Picture this: Judy, an Executive Coach and Trainer, joined me for what was supposed to be a regular session. But as soon as we started, life had other plans. A hurricane was barreling straight toward her home in North Florida, and understandably, her mind was elsewhere.
When something so massive and unpredictable is heading your way, how can you possibly focus on anything else? We had a plan, but I asked Judy if she’d rather shift gears and focus on the one thing that was top of mind- the hurricane. She said yes without hesitation.
This wasn’t just about her. She knew that everyone in her community, and anyone watching the news, was feeling a similar kind of fear and anxiety.
What You Can Control
Let’s face it: we can’t change the weather. We can’t stop a hurricane or control the forces of nature. But what we can control is how we respond to those forces.
This is where Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) tapping comes in. It’s not about changing the external situation- it’s about calming the internal storm. As Judy shared her nerves about the approaching hurricane, the memories of a past storm that caused minor damage to her home came flooding back. The fear was real, and I knew many others would be feeling it too.
But here’s the beauty of tapping: it gives you back control over your emotional response. Even when the situation itself feels out of control.
Using EFT to Ground Yourself
So, we got to work. Together, Judy and I started tapping, releasing the anxiety and nervousness that had taken hold. If you’re familiar with EFT, you know the process- tapping on specific points to release built-up stress. And if you’re new, don’t worry. We took it step by step.
We started with a few deep breaths, grounding ourselves in the present moment. Then, we tapped on the side of the hand, acknowledging the fear and tension Judy was feeling. With each point, we worked on releasing that nervous energy, slowly bringing her back to a place of calm.

By the time we finished our session, Judy’s trepidation had softened. The hurricane was still on its way, but she was emotionally more prepared. That’s the power of EFT- it allows you to release the emotional weight of a situation, even if you can’t change the situation itself.
